Understanding data transfer rate conversion

A data transfer rate converter changes a speed of data movement between units — megabits per second to megabytes per second, or gigabits to megabits. It answers the question behind every broadband plan: what download speed does the advertised number actually give me? The formula. Every value passes through the bit per second, and network rates use decimal steps of 1,000 — not the 1,024 used by the digital storage converter. A 1 Gbps fibre line gives 125 MB/s. Real transfers run below these ceilings because of protocol overhead, contention and the far end's own limits.

Where it's used. Comparing broadband plans, estimating download and backup times, sizing video streams (4K needs roughly 25 Mbps), and specifying network hardware. The single most common confusion is the lower-case b for bits versus the upper-case B for bytes — a factor of 8 that makes a "300 Mbps" plan feel eight times slower than expected if you read it as megabytes.
