How to calculate percentages

X% of Y — multiply Y by (X/100). For example, 20% of 150 = 150 × 0.20 = 30.

X is what % of Y — divide X by Y and multiply by 100. For example, 30 is what % of 150? (30/150) × 100 = 20%.

Percentage change — subtract the original from the new value, divide by the original, and multiply by 100. A positive result is an increase; negative is a decrease. Example: from 80 to 100: ((100−80)/80) × 100 = +25%.

Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. 15% of 240 = 240 × 15 ÷ 100 = 36. A quick check: 10% is 24, and 5% is half of that, 12; together they make 36.

How do I find what percentage one number is of another?

Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. 36 is (36 ÷ 240) × 100 = 15% of 240. The order matters: 240 is 666.7% of 36.

How do I calculate percentage change?

Subtract the old value from the new, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100. From 240 to 276 is (276 − 240) ÷ 240 × 100 = +15%. A fall from 276 back to 240 is −13.04%, not −15%, because the base has changed.

What is the difference between percent and percentage points?

Percentage points measure the gap between two percentages; percent measures relative change. An interest rate rising from 4% to 5% is up 1 percentage point, but it is 25% higher. Mixing the two is one of the most common errors in reporting.
