How to calculate a discount

- Enter the two figures you know.
- Read the answer and what you actually save.
- Switch modes to sanity-check an advertised "70% off" against the real numbers.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage to find the saving, then subtract it. 30% off $80 saves $24, so the sale price is $56. Equivalently, multiply by (1 − 0.30) = 0.70.
Do two discounts add up?
No. Successive discounts multiply. 20% off followed by another 10% off leaves 0.80 × 0.90 = 0.72 of the price, which is a 28% discount, not 30%. The order of the two does not matter.
How do I find the original price before a discount?
Divide the sale price by (1 − the discount rate). A $56 item marked 30% off was $56 ÷ 0.70 = $80. Adding 30% back to $56 gives $72.80, which is wrong, because the percentage applies to a different base.
How do I work out the percentage off from two prices?
Divide the saving by the original price and multiply by 100. A price cut from $80 to $56 is a saving of $24, and $24 ÷ $80 × 100 = 30% off.
